On this page
The best Nespresso machine for most home coffee bars is the Vertuo Pop+: it is 8.6 inches wide, brews 6 cup sizes from espresso to an 18 oz mug, and is the cheapest way into the Vertuo system. If you only drink espresso and want the cheapest pods, get the Essenza Mini, an Original machine just 3.3 inches wide.
Nespresso machines (single-serve capsule machines made for Nespresso by Breville and De’Longhi) come in two systems that use different pods. Pick the system first and the model second. Below I compare both, then give 5 picks with the sizes, tanks and cost per cup that decide whether a machine works on your coffee bar.
How I picked: this is research, not a hands-on test. Every pick is in stock on Amazon, rated 4.3 stars or higher by 500+ buyers, and matches a model that Wirecutter, CNN Underscored or Serious Eats recommends. Specs come from Nespresso’s spec pages and the Amazon listings, checked on October 25, 2026.
What is the difference between Nespresso Vertuo and Original?
Vertuo brews coffee and espresso in sizes up to 18 oz from barcoded pods; Original brews espresso, ristretto and lungo at 19 bar and accepts cheaper third-party pods. That one difference decides your drinks, your pod budget and which machines you can buy.
The table below sums up the two systems from Nespresso’s own comparison pages and the current Amazon listings.
| Vertuo | Original | |
|---|---|---|
| How it brews | Reads a barcode on each capsule and spins it | 19-bar pump, like a small espresso machine |
| Cup sizes | Espresso, double espresso, 5, 8, 12 and 18 oz (Pop+) | Ristretto 25 ml, espresso 40 ml, lungo 110 ml |
| Best drinks | Mugs of coffee, iced coffee, lattes | Espresso shots, cappuccinos, flat whites |
| Pods | Nespresso Vertuo only | Nespresso plus third-party and refillable pods |
| Pod cost | About $1.24 to $1.40 | From about $0.32 (compatible) |
| Smallest machine here | Vertuo Pop+, 8.6 in wide | Essenza Mini, 3.3 in wide |
My rule of thumb: if anyone in your house drinks a big mug of coffee every morning, buy Vertuo. If everyone drinks espresso or milk drinks built on a shot, buy Original and save on every pod.
Which Nespresso machine is best for a home coffee bar?

Pick by your coffee habit
There are 5 common coffee habits, and each one points to one machine:
- One big mug every morning: Vertuo Pop+, which brews a 12 oz or 18 oz mug from one pod.
- Iced lattes or cold foam: Vertuo Pop+ with Aeroccino3, because the frother makes cold foam.
- Two or three people, several mugs a day: VertuoPlus Deluxe, with a 25-second heat-up between cups.
- Straight espresso on a tiny counter: Essenza Mini, 3.3 inches wide and the cheapest pods.
- Cappuccinos on a pod budget: CitiZ & Milk, an Original machine that takes compatible pods.
If two habits apply, follow the pods. A house that drinks mugs and shots should go Vertuo, since only Vertuo brews both.
Vertuo Pop+: best small Vertuo machine
The Vertuo Pop+ is the narrowest Vertuo machine in this guide at 8.6 × 14 × 10.4 inches. Its 37.2 oz (1.1 L) water tank sits on the side, so you can refill it under a low shelf without pulling the machine out. It heats in 30 seconds, ejects the used pod and brews 6 sizes, including a 12 oz and an 18 oz mug.
At 10.4 inches tall, the Pop+ leaves more than 7 inches of room under a standard 18-inch upper cabinet. The catch is the pods: Vertuo capsules cost 2 to 4 times what Original-compatible pods do.

Models I left out
I left 3 popular models out on purpose. The Vertuo Next and the Vertuo Lattissima sit below 4.3 stars on their Amazon listings right now. The Vertuo Creatista has a real steam wand, but it was also rated below 4.3 stars and sold by a third-party seller when I checked.
Which Nespresso machines come with a milk frother?
Three picks here include a frother: the Vertuo Pop+ with Aeroccino3 and the VertuoPlus Deluxe with Aeroccino3 on the Vertuo side, and the CitiZ & Milk on the Original side. Any Nespresso machine also works with a separate Aeroccino3, so you can add milk later.
The Aeroccino3 has 3 modes: hot froth, hot milk and cold froth. It works with any coffee, so it stays useful if you ever switch machines.

How much does Nespresso coffee cost per cup?
Vertuo coffee costs about $1.24 to $1.40 a cup in pods; Original espresso costs from about $0.32 a cup with compatible pods. Those figures come from BrewSift’s capsule pages, and its pod price index (October 21, 2026) puts the median Original pod at $0.57 and the median K-Cup at $0.53.
The table below shows what that means for one person brewing one pod a day.
| Pod | Per cup | Per month (30) | Per year (365) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vertuo capsule (low) | $1.24 | $37 | $453 |
| Vertuo capsule (high) | $1.40 | $42 | $511 |
| Original, median pod | $0.57 | $17 | $208 |
| Original-compatible (cheapest) | $0.32 | $10 | $117 |
Two ways to cut the bill:
- Original machine plus compatible pods. This is the cheapest Nespresso setup by a wide margin, more than $300 a year less than Vertuo at one pod a day.
- Reusable capsules. Refillable stainless or plastic pods fit Original machines. Vertuo machines need the barcode, so reusable Vertuo pods are hit or miss.
Nespresso’s aluminum capsules are recyclable through its free recycling program, which is worth setting up if you go through 30 pods a month.
Will a Nespresso machine fit your coffee bar?
Every machine here fits a 15-inch-deep counter, and every one except the VertuoPlus Deluxe fits under an 18-inch upper cabinet. Width is where they differ: from 3.3 inches for the Essenza Mini to 14.6 inches for the CitiZ & Milk with its frother.
The table below adds a mug spot and the lid clearance I’d plan for, using the sizes above. The standard gap between counter and upper cabinets is about 18 inches.
| Machine | Width to plan (with mug spot) | Height | Room under 18-in uppers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essenza Mini | 3.3 in + 4 in = about 7.5 in | 8 in | About 10 in |
| Vertuo Pop+ | 8.6 in + 4 in = about 12.5 in | 10.4 in | About 7.5 in |
| Vertuo Pop+ with Aeroccino3 | About 16.5 in | 10.4 in | About 7.5 in |
| CitiZ & Milk | 14.6 in (frother included) | 12.4 in | About 5.5 in |
| VertuoPlus Deluxe | About 15 in (box listing) | Up to 15.5 in (box listing) | Tight; pull forward to open the lid |
Three more things to check:
- Outlet. These machines draw 1255 W to 1710 W. Plug them straight into the wall, not into a power strip shared with a kettle.
- Tank access. Side or front tanks (Pop+, CitiZ) refill in place. Rear tanks need the machine pulled forward.
- Pod storage. A drawer under the machine adds about 3.6 inches of height, so add it before you measure the cabinet gap.
If you’re planning the whole counter, my countertop coffee station guide shows how to lay out machine, mugs and pods in under 30 inches.
How do you set up a Nespresso coffee station?
A Nespresso coffee station needs 4 things: the machine, pod storage for about 2 weeks of capsules, a frother if you drink milk, and a spot for used pods. In most homes all 4 fit in 20 to 24 inches of counter.
Here is how I’d lay it out:
- Machine at the front edge, so the tank and the pod slot open without hitting the wall.
- Pods under or above. A 40-pod Vertuo drawer slides under the machine; a wall rack or a shallow shelf works for Original pods.
- Frother to the right (or left if you’re left-handed), next to the mugs.
- A recycling bag or bin for used capsules in the cabinet below.
Shop the Nespresso station
For more layouts, my coffee bar essentials list covers mugs, trays and storage, and the coffee bar cabinet guide shows cabinets with a hidden pod drawer.
How often should you descale a Nespresso machine?
Nespresso recommends descaling about every 3 months or 300 capsules, and sooner with hard water. Some of Nespresso’s country pages stretch that to 6 months or 600 coffees, so follow your machine’s descale light when it comes on, whichever comes first.
Scale slows the water flow and cools the coffee, and it is the first thing to rule out when a machine starts brewing short or lukewarm. One box of Nespresso’s descaling kit covers 2 descales.

Who should skip a Nespresso machine?
Skip a Nespresso machine if you want to pull espresso from fresh beans, brew a full pot for a family, or keep your cost per cup under 50 cents with Vertuo. Each of those habits points to a different machine type, listed below.
- You want to learn espresso: a manual machine with a grinder, like the ones in my best espresso machines for home guide or the Breville espresso machine guide.
- You brew 4 or more mugs at once: a drip maker, or a Keurig with a carafe option from my Keurig coffee maker guide.
- You want flavored pods in every flavor: K-Cups have a wider pod range than either Nespresso system.
For everyone else, a Nespresso machine is the fastest way to a good shot or a crema-topped mug on a small coffee bar. Start with the coffee machines hub if you’re still comparing types.
Frequently asked questions
Is Nespresso better than Keurig?
For espresso drinks, yes. A Nespresso Original machine brews at 19 bar, and Vertuo brews a crema-topped coffee, while a Keurig brews regular drip-style coffee through a pod. Keurig pods cost less on average and the brewers hold more water, so Keurig wins for big mugs of plain coffee.
Can you use non-Nespresso pods in a Nespresso machine?
In an Original machine, yes. The Original line accepts third-party compatible capsules and refillable pods. Vertuo machines read a barcode printed on each capsule, so they only brew Nespresso-made Vertuo capsules, including the Starbucks by Nespresso Vertuo range. Third-party Vertuo pods are rare.
Does a Nespresso machine make real espresso?
An Original machine comes close: it pushes water through finely ground coffee at up to 19 bar and makes a 40 ml espresso with crema. Vertuo espresso is brewed by spinning the capsule, so it tastes smoother and foamier. Neither replaces a manual espresso machine and grinder.
How long do Nespresso machines last?
Nespresso doesn't publish a lifespan, and the Essenza Mini and CitiZ listings I checked show a 1-year warranty. Descaling on schedule is the biggest thing you control, because mineral scale is what slows the pump and cools the coffee over time.
