The best coffee grinder for most home coffee bars is a conical burr grinder, and the OXO Brew Conical Burr Grinder is the value pick reviewers keep agreeing on: 15 settings plus micro-settings, a 12 oz hopper and a 12.9-inch height that fits under standard upper cabinets. For espresso, the Breville Smart Grinder Pro adds 60 settings and grinds straight into a portafilter.
A coffee grinder (also called a coffee mill or bean grinder) decides more about the taste of your cup than most coffee makers do. Below are 6 grinders and 2 espresso machines with a grinder built in, with the grind range, hopper size and real height of each one.
How I picked: this guide is research-based. I started from the grinders Wirecutter, Forbes Vetted, NBC Select, Food Network and Tom’s Guide recommend, then kept only models whose live Amazon listing was in stock and well rated when I checked on October 25, 2026. Specs come from the maker or the Amazon listing. I haven’t ground beans in all 8 myself, so I don’t score taste.

What is the difference between burr, blade and manual coffee grinders?
A burr grinder crushes beans between two burrs set a fixed distance apart, so the grounds come out close to one size. A blade grinder chops beans into dust and chunks. A manual grinder is a burr grinder you turn by hand.
Even grounds extract evenly, which is why every expert list I read recommends burrs. Forbes quotes one coffee expert putting it simply: blade grinders chop coffee “like spices,” with no consistency in grind size. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 list includes no blade grinders at all.
This table sums up the 3 types of coffee grinder.
| Type | How it grinds | Grind evenness | Noise | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electric burr | Motor turns conical or flat burrs | Even | Loud for 10 to 30 seconds | Daily drip, pour-over, French press, espresso |
| Manual burr | You turn a crank | Even (steel burrs) | Quiet | One or two cups, travel, small counters |
| Blade | Spinning blade chops beans | Uneven | Loud | Drip coffee on a tight budget, spices |
Conical burrs (cone inside a ring) are what all the electric burr grinders here use. Flat burrs, like the 64 mm set in the Fellow Ode Gen 2, are popular with pour-over fans.
Best coffee grinders for a home coffee bar
There are 6 grinders here, from a 3 oz blade grinder to an 18 oz espresso grinder. Pick by what you brew most: drip and French press work with any burr grinder, pour-over rewards a precise timer, and espresso needs fine steps like the Smart Grinder Pro’s 60 settings.
OXO Brew Conical Burr: best value burr grinder
The OXO Brew Conical Burr Grinder has 15 grind settings plus micro-settings and a 12 oz UV-blocking hopper, per OXO. A one-touch timer remembers your last dose, so the morning routine is a single button.

Should you buy an espresso machine with a grinder or a separate grinder?
Buy an espresso machine with a built-in grinder if you want one appliance, one plug and one footprint. Buy a separate espresso grinder if you may upgrade the machine later or also grind for pour-over and French press. A built-in grinder can’t be replaced on its own, and its range is tuned for espresso.

A separate setup takes more width. A Smart Grinder Pro is 6.3 inches wide, so a compact espresso machine plus that grinder fits in about 14 inches of counter. Our espresso machine guide lists machine widths.
What about a drip coffee maker with a grinder? I looked at grind-and-brew models from Cuisinart and KRUPS, and none met my rating and stock checks on Amazon in October 2026. A separate burr grinder next to your drip machine grinds more evenly anyway, and either part can be replaced alone.
What grind size do you need for each brew method?
Use extra coarse grounds for cold brew, coarse for French press, medium-coarse for Chemex, medium for drip machines, medium-fine for a V60 and fine for espresso. Each brewer’s contact time sets the size: longer steeping needs coarser grounds. A 4-minute French press takes coarse grounds; a 30-second espresso shot takes fine ones.
This chart matches each brew method with the grind texture and the grinders above that cover it.
| Brew method | Grind size | Feels like | Grinders that cover it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cold brew | Extra coarse | Peppercorns, cracked | All burr grinders here |
| French press | Coarse | Coarse sea salt | All burr grinders here |
| Chemex | Medium-coarse | Rough sand | All burr grinders here |
| Drip coffee maker | Medium | Regular sand | All, including KRUPS blade |
| Hario V60, AeroPress | Medium-fine | Table salt | All burr grinders here |
| Espresso | Fine | Powdered sugar, slightly gritty | Smart Grinder Pro, KitchenAid, built-in Breville grinders |
The texture column is a visual guide, not a lab measurement. Start there, then go finer if the coffee tastes sour and coarser if it tastes bitter. Our French press guide and pour-over guide give the full recipes.
How much counter space does a coffee grinder need?
An electric burr grinder needs about 6 x 8 inches of counter and a gap of its height plus 3 inches below your upper cabinets, so you can lift the hopper. The grinders here stand 12.9 to 15.3 inches tall, and the standard gap under upper cabinets is 18 inches. Height rules out more grinders than width.
How each grinder fits under standard 18-inch upper cabinets:
- Room to spare: 1Zpresso J (6.7 in), KRUPS F203 (8.2 in), OXO Brew (12.9 in), Baratza Virtuoso+ (13.4 in).
- Tight, pull it forward to refill: KitchenAid KCG8433 (15 in), Breville Smart Grinder Pro (15.3 in).
- Tightest: Barista Express (15.9 in) and Barista Pro (16 in). Both hold beans in a top hopper.
Also plan for 1 outlet per appliance; an espresso machine plus a separate grinder needs 2. Put the grinder on the side away from the sink so grounds don’t meet splashes. If your coffee bar is a cabinet top, our coffee bar cabinet guide lists depths, and the countertop coffee station guide covers layouts.
Who should skip a coffee grinder?
Skip a grinder if you use a pod machine, buy pre-ground coffee you like and finish a bag within 2 weeks, or have no counter space or outlet to spare. A grinder pays off only when you buy whole beans.
Pre-ground coffee in a sealed bag works fine for drip and French press. If you’re still building the rest of your setup, our coffee bar essentials list puts the grinder in order with the other tools, and the coffee machines hub collects our brewer guides.
Frequently asked questions
Is a burr grinder worth it?
Yes, if you buy whole beans and brew anything beyond basic drip. A burr grinder crushes beans to one size, so water extracts them evenly. A blade grinder chops them into dust and chunks, which pulls bitter and sour flavors from the same cup. If you only brew drip with pre-ground coffee and like it, a grinder is optional.
Can I use a regular coffee grinder for espresso?
Only if it grinds fine enough and adjusts in small steps. The Breville Smart Grinder Pro (60 settings) and the KitchenAid KCG8433 (70 settings) cover espresso. Blade grinders and most entry burr grinders tuned for drip can't make a fine, even espresso grind.
Is a manual coffee grinder better than an electric one?
A manual grinder isn't better, it's different. For the same money, a hand grinder like the 1Zpresso J gets you steel burrs that grind more evenly than an entry electric model, with no noise or cord. The trade-off is time: about a minute of cranking per cup, and 35 g of capacity.
What kind of grinder is best for cold brew?
Any burr grinder set to its coarsest step works for cold brew, because cold brew needs extra-coarse, even grounds that steep for 12 hours or more. A blade grinder makes too much fine dust, which clouds the concentrate and clogs mesh filters. Grind right before you start the steep.
